Christmas Run
On Saturday the 27th of December we gathered at Colmanswell Community Centre where refreshments were provided by the Colmanswell Committee. It was a fine fresh winter’s morning and the run was attended by 24 cars.
We headed off at 12 o'clock and travelled to Feenagh, on to Dromcollogher, Liscarroll and Buttevant after which we all went to the Corbett Court in Ballyhea for lunch.
Thanks to Nancy Hayes and the Colmanswell Community Council for the use of the premises and Gerry Hynes for planning the route.
Annual Club Dinner
Our Annual Club Dinner was held on 12-January in the Charleville Golf Club. Approximately 65 people attended and a great night was had by all.
Music was provided by Gerard and John Naughton and Michael Barry with a guest appearance by Breda and Tara Mulcahy.
Santa Claus took time out from his post-Christmas rest and made a surprise return trip from the North Pole to deliver presents to all at the party.
Thanks to Michael Donegan and Dom Treacy for organising the night; the staff of the Charleville Golf Club for a beautiful meal; Michael Barry, Gerard and John Naughton for providing the music and of course our anonymous Santa Claus for surprising us with a visit.
Annual Charity Run
We had a very successful run on Sunday 08-March-2009 in aid of St. Joseph’s Foundation, Charleville and the Friends of Mallow Hospital, Mallow. Despite the bad weather—rain and showers of snow—we had a good turn out between cars, trucks, vans and one landrover, 95 exhibitors in total. It is great to see such community spirit and generosity for these local charities in these hard times.
We headed off about 12 o’clock in the direction of Newmarket and did a 50 mile route, through North Cork via Ballyclough and Churchtown and ended up in Corbett Court in Ballyhea for lunch.
A big thanks to all who took part in the run and to St. Joseph’s Foundation for the use of their excellent facilities for all our events, also thanks to the stewards, and to Jerry Hynes for planning the route. Thanks too to all who helped out in the kitchen, a nice cup of tea and a scone goes down well especially on a cold morning in March.
We will be making a presentation to St. Joseph’s Foundation and the Friends of Mallow Hospital in due course when all the sponsorship cards are in.
A VW Bay Restoration Story
Mike Herbert
A 1975 Sligo registered Volkswagen Bay became mine in early February 2009.
I am the third owner of this vehicle which has remained unused for a considerable number of years; both previous owners were from Mayo. It was last taxed in 1979. Due to being idle and almost abandoned it was in need of a lot of repairs.
The underneath was in poor condition, with quite a lot of welding required.
The westie top was removed, repainted and refitted and surprisingly, there were no leaks in the canvas (haven’t tested that one fully yet!!). The 1600cc engine has been given a complete overhaul and put back in. The welding is now completed and the camper is being rewired at the moment and fitted with a leisure battery.
Although originally blue it is being repainted Lecht Orange under Pastel White which is an original colour of the ‘70’s bay...We plan to change all of the interior, new upholstery, sink and hob. The upholstery will have some orange that will tie in with the external colour and some original orange curtains that have been obtained (washed up quite well even though they are sun faded!).
It is still a work in progress but we are getting there very well. There are about 200 hrs gone into it by mid March and approx 200 more to follow.
